Fifth win in a row for the Blues as they surge towards the playoffs. This game had it all: DJ King destroyed Barch, Erik Johnson even had a fight, Paul Kariya scored twice, Boyes followed up his goal against the Coyotes with a goal against the Stars, Oshie and Berglund scored and Matt D’Agostini made his debut as a Blue. D’Agostini had a solid game – with just under 12 minutes of ice time. I’m sure, once he relaxes and gets used to his team-mates, that he’ll be a very good addition to the team.
The Blues goal drought is hopefully behind them as they’re now picking up goals from players who are SUPPOSED to be scoring. Kariya, for instance. Although he’s been playing well and setting up others, he’s found goals hard to come by. The same can be said of Brad Boyes.
This was an eventful game – Kariya putting the Blues ahead not longer after DJ King’s fight. Although the Stars tied the game shortly afterwards, the Blues weren’t going to let up. The Blues were outshot 30-27 by the Stars but it was the quality of the chances, together with strong goaltending by Chris Mason, that counted. The Stars pulled Marty Turco after he’d given up 4 goals on 11 shots and he was replaced by Lehtonen who they’d recently acquired from Atlanta. Lehtonen fared better – giving up 2 goals on 16 shots but it has to be said that the Stars defense didn’t give their goaltenders much help.
The great thing about the game was that the Blues passed well, they attacked with speed and decision, defended well and, in essence, played a much better and more well-rounded game. It may not have been what you’d term “great” but it was certainly light years ahead of the game the Blues were playing a few months ago. It gives us hope – and more importantly, it makes us and the players believe.
